ULTRABLAND Designs Promo Package Graphics FOR Robert Klein HBO Special

Ultrabland recently designed a promo graphics package for the upcoming HBO comedy special, Robert Klein: The Amorous Busboy of Decatur Avenue. The author, actor, storyteller, and comedy legend’s autobiographical show chronicles his life as a middle-class kid growing up in the Bronx.

Ultrabland designer, Ryan Bramwell, teamed with HBO creative director, Chris Sitfel, and writer/producer, Suzanne Cooke, to come up with a design concept that integrated themes from Klein’s show with visual elements from his old stomping grounds. Bramwell then created a graphic look for the campaign that placed the comedian back in his childhood environment in a new and visually innovative way. He took a trip to Klein’s old Bronx neighborhood and shot stills of the actual locations the comic talks about in his show, including the apartment building Klein lived in when he was a kid.

“Within the graphics, we chose to use cut-out poses of Robert Klein to heighten his character and integrate him into the Bronx environments,” notes Bramwell.

“Stylistically, we gave the spot a classic feel that reflects the era of Klein’s youth. The most symbolic elements of the neighborhood – such as his childhood apartment, the store signs, lampposts, subway stop, and park that he was beat up in - are all represented, but in a surreal, hyper-stylized version reminiscent of the comedian’s boyhood years. To help the package integrate with footage from the show, the design and color scheme play off the show’s set design with its use of warm, muted colors.”

Ultrabland mixer, Victor Rice, created sound design for the graphic animations and mixed the finished promos. “The animation was really strong," states Rice, "so we tried to bring the viewer in closer to the spot with subtle touches, like the sound of the old marquee lights.”

Ultrabland owner, Bennett Killmer notes, “Robert Klein is a timeless comic who appeals to a wide range of demographics. It was important to create a graphics package that would appeal to fans who grew up with his wry brand of humor, as well as younger generations that are just discovering him.”

The show ties into Klein’s book, The Amorous Busboy of Decatur Avenue: A Child of The Fifties Looks Back.
