ARRISCAN Film Scanner Arrives at Chicago’s NoloDigitalFilm

By Neal Romanek

Jul 11, 2007, 08:38

When the founders of NoloDigitalFilm decided to open a new postproduction facility in Chicago, they wanted to offer the best, state-of-the-art equipment to their clients. “It’s been pretty exciting, production has been doing well in Chicago,” says Joe Flanagan, the company’s producer. “It was about a year that we started talking about the facility. We included ARRI right off the bat.”

Explains Nolo Engineer Boris Seagraves, “We wanted to build a facility without the burden of the video workflow and be completely data-centric. Doing so provides the ability to handle projects of all types from digital intermediates to color correction for television to restoration work. ARRISCAN was a natural choice to fit into this workflow because of its fast scanning speed and general overall flexibility to accommodate all types of projects.”

Due to its innovative design, the ARRISCAN is suited for almost any scanning application including digital intermediates, visual effects, restoration and archival. The film scanner enables digital laboratories and postproduction houses to drastically increase their productivity and experience a new standard of quality in film scanning.

By employing the ARRISCAN, NoloDigitalFilm offers film scanning in 2K, 4K and 6K resolutions. Through the data-centric pipeline, image quality and resolution are not sacrificed while more tools are available for creatives to push visual boundaries with color control, visual effects, digital opticals and dust busting. The facility is also able to provide 4K, 10-bit log digital intermediates. To certify the ARRISCAN was the right choice for Nolo, the team went through careful evaluations and comparison testing.

“We did test scanning in both 2K and 4K. We found the image quality to be excellent. One of the things that made the ARRISCAN stand out was the capability to be able to scan at up to 8 frames a second. That, along with availability of the dailies package and how well suited the scanner is for restoration jobs in dealing with damaged film, definitely tipped the scales toward ARRI,” says Seagraves.

NoloDigitalFilm is located in Chicago to serve its thriving industry, but the post house is ready to accommodate filmmakers from any location. “We designed a facility from the ground up and being that we’re an all-data workflow, we can do things very efficiently, allowing our clients to focus on the creative part of the process instead of the technical. Our aim was to bring high-end digital intermediate tools to Chicago and now that we’ve opened, I think we’re confident that we can attract business from out of town as well.”
