FotoKem Posts Stereo3D Music Video with Quantel Pablo 4K

Hollywood - Continuing to explore new ground in stereoscopic 3D post production, FotoKem recently employed Quantel's Pablo 4K with the Stereo3D option to complete post production work on the first ever stereo3D music video. Missy Elliott's Ching-A-Ling, directed by @radical.media's Dave Meyers, debuted on MTV in support of the theatrical release of the Disney film Step Up 2: The Streets, which features the song on its soundtrack.
And all those music fans who donned 3D glasses (which were made available through music retailer F.Y.E. outlets throughout the United States) enjoyed an eye-popping display as the Grammy-winning hip hop singer and a troupe of Harajuku-style dancers seemed to leap right off the screen with their acrobatic, time and space warping dance moves. Both 3D and 2D versions of the video also appeared on BET and other television outlets.
The video is not only a visual tour de force, it is a testament to how Quantel's Pablo has revolutionized stereoscopic 3D filmmaking, transforming what was once a time- and cost-intensive process into something that is becoming almost routine. ''One of the nice things about Pablo 4K is that conforming is very quick,'' said FotoKem Head of Digital Production John Nicolard, who oversaw the project. ''When we received an EDL from the editor, we were able to conform it quickly and show it to him for comments. He would make changes and then we would quickly re-conform again, it was very fast.'' Glen Lajeski and Mitch Leib oversaw the project for Disney.
Missy Elliott and the other performers were shot on a special effects stage against green-screen with the Pace/Cameron Fusion System (where two HD cameras are rigged together to produce the two video streams). Background environments were added later by visual effects house Elicit FX. ''It was beautifully shot,'' said Nicolard, ''and that helped the color correction process go very smoothly— the direction we received was to make it look vibrant, colorful, alive and fun.'' The color correction and conform work was handled by FotoKem's John Daro and Eric Wood respectively.
Having worked on numerous 3-D projects, FotoKem is well versed in manipulating stereo3D imagery to provide audiences with a dazzling experience without overpowering them. ''We've done 3D features where, because of the extended project length, it was important to make the experience comfortable to the viewer's eye,'' Nicolard explained. ''With a music video that is only 4.5 minutes long, you can swing the bat a little harder. In this case, we exploited the convergence possibilities and pushed it as far as we could go.''
Because Pablo 4K has the ability to make stereo3D convergence adjustments in real time, the material could be fine-tuned during sessions with the director, editor and other creative personnel present—not only saving valuable time, but also encouraging creative collaboration. ''I could fix shots on the fly without having to render or slow down the session,'' recalled Daro. ''I could get it to the point where we were all happy with it and we knew the shot would work.''
In making stereo3D post work faster and more interactive, Pablo 4K has made the process more satisfying for everyone involved. ''Missy Elliott came in and looked at it,'' recalled Nicolard. ''Hi-Hat the choreographer also looked at it - we had a lot of input from the talent. They loved it.''
