Alacrity Media Takes 4K Digital Pipeline on the Road with Customized Road Grader Van

San Diego, CA, November 19, 2008 -- Alacrity Media announced the debut of its customized Road Grader van, a mobile implementation of a data-based production and post production pipeline. As a complete DI suite on wheels, the Road Grader is designed to meet the 4K camera and real-time post production needs of filmmakers, cinematographers, and creative teams that are using data acquisition to create their feature films, commercials, and other imagery projects, on location.
Alacrity Media has installed the newest 4K digital cameras and digital intermediate (DI) software in the Road Grader to realize amazing efficiencies that save both time and money in filmmaking, yet achieve image quality on par with 35mm film. The key components for this new data methodology are the RED ONE Digital Cinema Camera and the real-time SCRATCH Digital Process Solution from ASSIMILATE. Because SCRATCH supports the RED CODE native files, Alacrity has developed a real-time SCRATCH-RED Data Workflow that delivers quality post-production results with a strong cost/benefit ratio for clients.
"Traditional methods of creating motion media have been undergoing fundamental changes, with 4K data acquisition quickly moving into the limelight as the means to make cost-effective quality films, commercials, and other media," says Blair Paulsen, founder and owner of Alacrity Media. "While these changes are occurring in large and small studios around the globe, we're taking this new 4K data technology a step further by going on the road and on location to give clients immediate feedback and results for their imagery projects."
The Road Grader offers:
· Primary color grading of 4K footage in real time with full quality de-bayer at 2K or 1080P, using a proper control surface for lift, gamma and gain
· Complete Final Cut Studio editorial system to create EDLs used for conforming in SCRATCH; offline proxies require no rendering time
· DPs can view their images on an eCinema color evaluation monitor in a proper viewing environment with color correction applied in real time
· Viewing of images in full 10-bit space on the HP DreamColor monitor
· Real time layoff to tape via uncompressed HD-SDI in 4:4:4 or 4:2:2 color space
Meet the 4K Ninjas
The Road Grader post-production suite takes to the road with the 4K Ninjas, a co-op team of 4K camera and DI experts who have grouped together to meet the more complex needs of high-end productions with enough manpower, cameras, and the latest DI software. This elite team includes Blair Paulsen (RED camera #19), Steve Tammi (RED camera #17), Evin Grant (RED camera #199), Brook Willard, Zak Sandberg, and Bobby Maruvada, who all share similar and complementary skill sets. The Road Grader is shared by the 4K Ninjas, working independently or together, depending on the needs of a given project.
Paulsen explains, "Any of the Ninja pros can interface with the DP, camera team, sound mixer, playback operator, VFX supervisor, colorist, and support on-set editorial right in the Road Grader. We recommend an on-site camera Ninja and a Ninja data manager, who handles the downloading, organizing, and verifying of all the footage."
Alacrity Media
Alacrity Media transcends the traditional production/post-production boundary to unify a project down to its pixels. We belong to a new era of videographers, or 4K-ographers, with a more comprehensive vision of the future of 4K media workflow. We strive to give visual power back to the cinematographer, by acting as connective tissue for the data workflow to travel seamlessly back to the post house. "Looks" intended during production should endure through a project's release. Employing artistic vision, we make organic this process of digital imaging, to eliminate inconveniences, time and money-wasting.
Blair Paulsen is the president of Alacrity Media. Blair is also a D.P. with his own 4K camera, RedOne #19. He co-founded the 4K Ninjas, a collective of RedOne owners and operators. He had a vision to place a digital imaging suite on wheels. Our Road Grader Van will pull up anywhere to wrangle your data and move your images efficiently to post, delivered in any format desired including real time HDSDI output. Directors, Producers AND D.P.s will have the ability to view dailies in a proper viewing environment on the eCinema monitor. The "in-van" ScratchCine system color grades and plays back RAW .r3d (RedCode) in real time.
Alacrity Media is also equipped for full production to delivery.
4K Ninjas
The 4K Ninjas is a co-op group of independent professionals skilled in the use of the RED ONE 4K camera and the SCRATCH-RED Workflow. They have teamed together to offer complete camera package rentals, with all the peripherals, and broadly experienced on-set camera technicians, as well as on-site post production services.
