The 2007 Los Angeles Film Festival will screen 50 short films commissioned by the SOS campaign as part of Live Earth Day: A Celebration of Earth on Sunday, June 24. SOS is the campaign behind the 24-hour, 7-continent Live Earth concert series on July 7, 2007. The mission of the SOS Short Films Program is to create a series of educational and compelling short films that highlight the problems of, and engage people with solutions for the global climate crisis. Live Earth Day is sponsored by Green Rubber.
Additionally, the Million Tree Initiative Los Angeles (MTLA) launched by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa in 2006 will participate in this year's film festival. MTLA will be holding free tree adoptions to the first 200 residents of the City of Los Angeles who visit their informational booth during the closing day festivities on June 24.
"In true Film Independent spirit, these short films are inspiring and provocative, and it is exciting to present the voices of such a diverse group of filmmakers," said festival director, Rich Raddon. "We are proud to be a part of this important campaign to help motivate and educate audiences."
Founded by Kevin Wall, SOS and Live Earth are designed to trigger a mass movement to combat the climate crisis. Live Earth is a monumental music event on July 7, 2007 featuring nine concerts, a special broadcast event in Antarctica and Kyoto, and over 150 headlining music acts broadcasted to over two billion people.
"The goal of the SOS campaign and Live Earth concerts is to engage a global audience with solutions to the crisis of global warming," said Wall. "Just like the 150 music artists who have stepped up to play the Live Earth concerts, the world filmmaking community has answered the SOS call in a big way. We are proud to present the SOS Short Films collection at the Los Angeles Film Festival and are thrilled to have such a powerful platform to share our message of urgency and hope."
Supported by Al Gore, SOS has commissioned 50 award-winning filmmakers from wide-ranging genres and mediums, including feature films, documentaries, music videos, commercials and animation to create provocative shorts of approximately 10 minutes in length. The films range in tone from factual and dramatic to fictional and comedic. Filmmakers include Madonna, Joaquin Phoenix, Chad Lowe, Roman Coppola, Casey Affleck, and Amy Berg.
The Festival will showcase these 50 short films on Sunday, June 24 from 12:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m. at the Landmark's Regent Theatre on Broxton Avenue. A second screening which is both free and outdoors will take place at 8:30
p.m. on the Festival Promenade on Broxton Avenue. Environmental groups will occupy booths on Broxton Avenue during the day to educate attendees about the climate crisis and what we can all do to make a better tomorrow.
