LipSync Post completed digital intermediate work, visual effects, audio post and deliverables for Good, a feature film directed by Vicente Amorim and shot by Andrew Dunn. Set in 1930s Germany during the rise of national socialism, the film is based on the play by CP Taylor with Viggo Mortensen in the lead.
After scanning the 3-perf 35mm film negative at 6K on the company's pin-registered Northlight film scanners, LipSync’s Lee Clappison completed the DI work using Quantel’s iQ Pablo in collaboration with the cinematographer.
Similarly, the director wanted a clean, exciting and fresh soundtrack that invoked the excitement of a society being rejuvenated. The LipSync sound department, led by sound mixer Paul Cotterell and joined by supervising sound editor Paul Davies, began working with the sound recordist before filming started to ensure that their approaches were compatible.
The audio was mixed using an AMS Neve DFC desk, running the dialogue, foley and music from Pro Tools systems and FX from a Nuendo system. All the tracks were kept "live" throughout the mix. The sound laybacks were created in LipSync’s sound theaters.
The deliverables –- D5-HD, HDCAM SR and multiple DigiBeta tapes in three aspect ratios –- were created in LipSync’s calibrated suites. The film was finally output to 35mm via high-speed laser recorders and then signed off at one of the largest and most unforgiving screens in the West End, The Vue 5 in Leicester Square.
“I had a great experience producing Good with LipSync; having all departments under one roof made for a slick but flexible postproduction process,” said Miriam Segal, Producer, Good. “The company also has a "face." You feel like you are being brought into the family and they will look after you and your film, just as they do their employees. I didn't even hesitate when deciding where to take my next film. I hope that LipSync will remain a great postproduction partner for many projects to come."
“It’s great for us to be able to involve so many departments on one project. Everyone understands from the start what our clients are trying to achieve and can relate more to how the project is coming together, and I think that leads to a more cohesive end result,” said Kevin Phelan, Head of Postproduction, LipSync Post. “Our clients really appreciate being able to bring their entire projects to us, it’s easier for them to be in one place and the quality of our work in every department fully justifies their faith in us.”
Good is planned for theatrical release later this year.
